Draken Has Set Sail for Oslo for The Odyssey Premiere

This morning, Draken Harald Hårfagre cast off from her home port in Kopervik and began her voyage toward Oslo. In the Norwegian capital, the ship and her crew will join the Norwegian premiere celebrations for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

At 10:00 AM today, Draken Harald Hårfagre left Kopervik and set course along the Norwegian coast. After several days at sea, the world’s largest Viking ship sailing in modern times is expected to arrive in Oslo on 15 July.

It will be the first time Draken sails into the Norwegian capital.

From Kopervik to Oslo

Draken was built in Haugesund, with home port in Kopervik, to explore what the great Viking ships were truly capable of. She is not a museum object and not a film prop, but a living, ocean-going ship made of oak, rope, sail and craftsmanship. She is kept alive by a working crew.

The voyage from Kopervik to Oslo is planned for 10 to 15 July. Along the way, people will be able to follow Draken’s progress through updates on drakenhh.com and our social channels.

For the ship and crew, this journey marks the beginning of a special week. It brings together Norway’s maritime heritage, modern seamanship and a remarkable reunion for the people who helped bring Draken to the screen.

A Real Ship in The Odyssey

Draken’s arrival in Oslo is part of the wider celebrations surrounding Christopher Nolan’s new epic film, The Odyssey.

Draken Harald Hårfagre is featured in the film as Odysseus’ ship, together with Draken´s international crew onboard. The crew represents more than ten countries, and several of them are now sailing with Draken to Oslo before joining their fellow crew members for the film’s Norwegian premiere celebrations.

For everyone who has built, sailed, maintained and cared for Draken over the years, this is a special moment.

Draken was created to test history in real conditions: wind, waves, weather, craftsmanship and human endurance. That same authenticity is what she brings to the screen.

A Reunion for the Crew

The voyage to Oslo is also about bringing people back together.

During the filming of The Odyssey, Draken’s international crew worked on board and around the ship for long days, in real sea conditions, and in a shared adventure few will ever forget.

Now, many of them are returning to Draken.

Several are sailing with the ship from Kopervik to Oslo, while others will travel in from Norway, Sweden, the United States and across Europe to gather in Oslo. Together, they will sit down in Norway’s only IMAX cinema and watch The Odyssey for the very first time.

For the crew, this will be more than a film screening. It will be a reunion, a chance to meet again, to remember the voyage, and to see the result of a chapter they helped bring to life.

Arrival in Oslo on 15 July

Draken is expected to arrive at Honnørbrygga, by Oslo City Hall, on Wednesday 15 July at 1:00 PM.

The arrival will be marked with a public welcome, music, speeches, and an opportunity to see the 35-meter Viking ship up close. After the arrival ceremony, Draken will continue to her berth by SALT Art & Music at Langkaia, where she will remain during her stay in Oslo.

We invite boats of all sizes to join us on the water and help create a memorable arrival as Draken sails into the Oslofjord.

Visit Draken in Oslo

From 19 to 31 July, Draken will be open to the public in Oslo.

Visitors will have the opportunity to come on board through guided tours, experience the ship up close, meet the story behind her and explore the exhibition on the quay.

Opening hours:

A Living Viking Ship

Draken Harald Hårfagre is built after historical inspiration from the Viking Age and sailed by professional seafarers and volunteers from around the world. The project began with a simple but ambitious question:

What were the largest Viking ships really capable of?

That question has taken Draken across oceans, into storms, through narrow harbors and now onto cinema screens. But above all, it has kept her alive as a place where people meet history through action, by sailing, maintaining, learning and sharing.

As Draken now sails toward Oslo, she carries with her the story of everyone who has been part of the journey so far.

And this summer, for the first time, Oslo gets to welcome her.
